Preparing estimates without considering the geographical features of respective regions is the main reason for the early corrosion of roads under the Public Works Department and the panchayats, representatives of the Kerala Government Cherukita Contractors' Association have said.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday, association Vadakara taluk committee general secretary M.A. Gafoor Arur said most Assistant Engineers (AE), who prepared estimates for the government, did it without factoring in some very crucial factors.
The engineers were forced to do so owing to a shortage of hands and the heavy work lord on them. “At the moment, there is only one AE for seven panchayats in the Tuneri block of the Vadakara taluk,” Mr. Arur said.
“Though the AEs are qualified, they seriously lacked practical knowledge due to a lack of experience,” he said .
The association would stage a dharna in front of the Collectorate (in Kozhikode) on Monday in protest against the neglect of the authorities towards some of the longstanding demands and grievances of the association, association president M.K. Balan said. A lasting solution could be found only if the authorities were ready to rectify shortcomings in the preparation of estimates and revise PWD scheduled rates.
“These are among the important demands. We had also urged the government to ensure availability of sand and kerosene for road work through special passes,” he said.
